  • National series returns to four cities; offers sprint and intermediate distance triathlons
  • Unique race format features festive atmosphere, live bands on the course, and a finish line concert

San Diego, Calif. (November 29, 2011) – Competitor Group, Inc (CGI), the leading media and event resource in the active lifestyle industry, has announced that the Land Rover TriRock Triathlon Series of entertainment-themed triathlons will return in 2012 to four nationwide markets, with two new markets to be announced at a later date.

The 2012 series will kick off in the historic naval community of Annapolis, Maryland, before heading to New York, Seattle and San Diego. Skilled endurance athletes and aspiring triathletes alike can compete, with options available for both sprint and intermediate distances. Participants just testing the waters of the triathlon experience can also sign up as a 3-person relay team, taking on either the swim, bike or run component and enjoying the day with friends.

“Triathlon is a challenging sport, but one that should also be enjoyable and inclusive,” said Zach Barnhorst, Operations Manager. “We’re reaching a broader audience of athletes through the Land Rover TriRock Series and hope to continue to grow the event across the country.”

The Land Rover TriRock Triathlon Series has introduced a brand new concept to the industry, bringing together entertainment and fitness with live bands playing along the swim, bike and run courses and a post-race party and concert at the finish line. The Series launched in San Diego on September 12, 2010 to a sold-out field of 1,200 triathletes and has since expanded across the country. TriRock San Diego became the largest triathlon in the City of San Diego in its second year, drawing 2,000 entrants.

The sport of triathlon is growing at a rapid rate, driven by a growing focus on health and fitness. More than 2.3 million participants completed an event last year, an increase of 55%, according to the Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association.

Created by the organizers of the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series, The Land Rover TriRock Triathlon Series has embraced the influx of newcomers to the sport, with more than 30% of its participants competing in their first triathlon in 2010. Half of the series participants travel to each event from outside the local market and more than two in five finishers are female.

Each event features a consumer expo prior to and during the event, with unique divisions, including Military, Athena & Clydesdale and a Beach Cruiser competition in San Diego. All participants will receive a finisher’s medal, technical t-shirt, red carpet finish, post-race breakfast and access to the post-race concert and beer garden.
