  • Mayor George N. Cretekos Kicks Off inaugural TriRock Clearwater Triathlon by Firing cannon at the Start

CLEARWATER, FL – Nov. 11, 2012 – With ideal temperatures and clear skies in Clearwater, participants from 32 states and five countries ended the triathlon season at the inaugural Land Rover TriRock Clearwater Triathlon. City of Clearwater Mayor George N. Cretekos joined the over 800 participants by firing a miniature cannon to kick off the race start. The event concluded with a rocking finish line concert and post-race breakfast in the park at Pier 60.

Nat Glackin, age 30, from St. Petersburg finished first in the Men’s Intermediate distance in 2:01:35. The Women’s Intermediate first place finisher, Lauryn MacFawn, from Lavale, Maryland, was not far behind Glackin with a time of 2:11:19.  Bachelorette Season 6’s Roberto Martinez from Tampa finished his first sprint triathlon in 1:33:26.

“I was really excited to give this course a shot,” said Glackin, who has been actively participating in triathlons for the past six years. “I live nearby and ride these roads a lot. It’s a course you can go fast on. However, the bridges force you to get outside your comfort zone since the rest of the course was flat as a pancake. I’m glad that I’m going out on a high note at the end of the triathlon season.”

“It was a really fun triathlon and I was hoping to place in this race,” said MacFawn, who recently graduated from Syracuse University. “I’ve been racing since I was young, it runs in our family.”

MacFawn was in good company at the race as her father Ian placed third in his age group (60 – 65) in 2:49:16. She jokingly adds, “I actually had the exact same bike time as my dad so I’ll have to train a little harder next time.”

“This is my hometown and it feels like it was meant to be to do my first triathlon here,” said Roberto Martinez from Bachelorette Season 6. “Clearwater Beach is one of the most beautiful places you could do something like this. There were moments that were difficult on the course but overall I felt really good. I never practiced the transitions during training, so I was a little concerned about them, but everything went smoothly.”

The course boasted a single loop, swim in the Gulf of Mexico, followed by a flat single loop bike course that took athletes through the sites and scenes of downtown Clearwater. The triathlon finished with a flat single loop run course along Clearwater Harbor and the beach.

Seasoned veterans and beginners alike enjoyed entertainment along the course and a rockin’ post-race concert and beer garden on the sand with family and friends. In true LandRover TriRock Series fashion, participants received a finisher’s medal, Asics technical t-shirt, red carpet finish and post-race breakfast in celebration of their day.
