If you haven’t gotten in the game now is the time.  On the 20th of each month Bob Babbitt brings YOU the best discount on all open 2014 TriRock Triathlon Series events, but more importantly he also has a cool piece of swag for a few extra-lucky individuals in each market.

Here’s what the winners are saying:

Bob,

Thank you very much for the follow up.  The book did arrive last month and I have been thumbing through it to serve as motivation for my training.  While I’m not doing the “Iron” distance any time soon, it is very cool to see what goes into it.  Also, I knew it would be autographed, but did not expect it to be personalized to me…Very cool!  Thanks again.  I’m looking forward to San Diego in September…Just wish it was sooner!

 -Brandon, TriRock San Diego

Hi Bob,

I received your book and I love it. I’ve been reading it and love the stories.  Is this official race swag, cause if it is, it’s pretty sweet!

 -Dave, TriRock Philadelphia

This is awesome! Can’t wait to get out there this spring and work hard.

 -Katherine, TriRock Lake Geneva

Hello Bob,

Your book got here and is amazing. Very fun to look through it and see the differences throughout the years. My husband wants to get into triathlons now after seeing it! Now I just have to teach him how to swim…Thanks again!

-Keasha, TriRock Colorado

Hi Bob–I received the book and thank you!  Got me excited to start training again–have a great day—–

 -Mary, TriRock Philadelphia

CLEARWATER – The Nov. 10 TriRock triathlon meant different things to different people. To its organizers, it meant an opportunity to raise money for the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation. To city officials, it meant a way to promote Clearwater tourism. To participants, it meant a chance to compete in a world-class venue. To local hoteliers and merchants, it meant a way to increase business. And to some residents along the event’s route, it meant a brief disruption of traffic. But overall, the triathlon was a big success.

“The beauty of the area was a big plus, not only for the participants from the U.S., but those who came from overseas as well,” TriRock spokesman Ted Matellus told the Clearwater City Council at its Nov. 20 meeting.

Nearly 1,000 participants came from Canada, the Dominican Republic, Great Britain, Ireland, the Netherlands, Turkey and 32 U.S. states.

“For a guy like myself, who comes from up north, if you give me a chance to go someplace that’s warm, I’m there,” Matellus said.

Clearwater was the seventh and last stop on the TriRock Triathlon Series 2013 tour. The other events were held in Philadelphia on June 21 and 22; in Aurora, Colo., on July 13; in Asbury Park, N.J., on Aug. 25; in Austin, Texas, on Sept. 2; in Lake Geneva, Wis., on Sept. 14 and in San Diego, Calif., on Sept. 22.

“This Gulf Coast beach community provides a spectacular backdrop for local triathletes and those traveling from across the country,” for the final event of the year, Matellus said of Clearwater.

This was only the second year in which a TriRock triathlon has been held in Clearwater, although Iron Man triathlons were held here in previous years. Unlike a traditional triathlon, TriRock features “great music along the course” and a concert at the finish line. It also has such amenities as a beer garden and a post-race breakfast.

”Clearwater not only serves as an impressive setting for the race course but offers a prime vacation destination, allowing participants to extend their stay and enjoy the beach voted ‘Best sand on the East Coast’ by Conde Nast Traveler,” Matellus said.

He added that the event has “received community support” from local endurance-industry experts and triathlon clubs, local sponsors and partners, expo vendors, the Hyatt Regency of Clearwater Beach, the Bay Care Health System, the City of Clearwater and the city’s mayor, George Cretekos.

“TriRock’s swim, bike, run, rock theme promotes a fun and athlete-friendly atmosphere.” Matellus said.

To minimize the impact on traffic, the event started at 6:50 a.m. and was over by 11 a.m. It began on Clearwater Beach with an open-water swim near Pier 60. The running events included sprint and intermediate-distance races, as well as a three-person relay.

The bicycling event, which raises the ire of some local residents because of the traffic disruptions it causes, took cyclists on a scenic tour through Sand Key, Clearwater Beach, the Memorial Causeway and Island Estates, with no major traffic problems reported.

“It was just really a super event,” Cretekos said. “We look forward to 2014.”

    Two-time Ironman World Champion Chris “Macca” McCormack wins Sprint Distance;

TriRock Austin Triathlon draws more than 2,000 participants to Auditorium Shores

Austin, TX – September 2, 2013 – Following a swim, bike and run throughout downtown Austin, TriRock Austin Triathlon presented by REI celebrates a host of winners. Two San Antonio residents Daniel Vertiz and Tatiana Vertiz, not only placed first overall in the men’s and women’s Intermediate Open, but are also brother and sister. Daniel Vertiz finished with a time of 1:59:51, while his sister completed the race in 2:19:42.

On top of family bragging rights and race medals, the endurance sports siblings each took home a prize package that included a pair of Asics shoes and Maui Jim sunglasses. All Austin participants received a finisher’s medal, technical t-shirt, red carpet finish, post-race breakfast and access to the finish line festival, concert, and beer garden.

“TriRock Austin is my season opener and first triathlon in two years,” said Daniel Vertiz, who is going into his sophomore year at University of Texas. “It was a mental battle out there. I went out very conservative on the run due to the heat. Overall, I was on the edge the whole race, really trying to push myself and stay ahead of the competition. I hope to get my pro card in US Open Dallas Triathlon.”

Scott Tonder placed second in the men’s intermediate distance in a time of 2:04:23, while last year’s winner and Austin native, Jamie Cleveland, took third place in 2:04:41.

Chris “Macca” McCormack took first place in the men’s Sprint Open division, while 16-year-old Mason Riley from San Antonio came in second place, only six minutes behind the two-time Ironman World Champion. Macca is working toward his next race at Kona this year.

“I’ve raced in Austin three times. This is by far the best course—the other ones, you wouldn’t even know you’re in Austin. You get a real feel for the city by racing this event,” said Macca.

TriRock Austin started on Auditorium Shores at Lady Bird Lake and winded through the streets of downtown. Spectators and upbeat music helped motivate and cheer on the sprint, intermediate and relay participants along the course.

    • Locals from Denver sweep first place in the Sprint and Intermediate distance triathlon
    • Bachelorette Season 6’s Roberto Martinez participated in sprint triathlon

Athletes swam, biked, ran and rocked around Aurora Reservoir at the inaugural TriRock Colorado Triathlon presented by REI on Saturday, July 13. Denver resident Molly Smith put the pressure on the in the intermediate run course, taking the lead among the men and women around mile 2, and ultimately placing first in the women’s and overall in 2:20:23.

In the men’s intermediate-distance race, Justin Moser placed first in 2:21:41, while Louis Cicchino followed in second place with a time of 2:21:50 and Thomas Beac rounded out the podium in third place (2:23:51). Mary Presecan and Kristen Miller placed second and third, respectively, in the women’s intermediate race.

“It was a challenging course, with some hills,” said Smith, who runs with Runner’s Roost and is training with the Rocky Mountain Triathlon Club for a Half Ironman next weekend. “I’m the strongest at running. It’s a part of the race where other people might start fading, but I tell myself, ‘run, run, you can do this.’”

Competing in his third race ever, Marc Middlekauff of Denver, Colo. crossed the finish line as the winner of the sprint race in 1:04:26. Highlands Ranch’s Dale Syta earned second overall in 1:06:50, while Denver’s Chris Dicroce rounded out the sprint podium.

“It wasn’t my goal to win, it was kind of a surprise,” Middlekauff said at the finish line. “[The race] was very well organized. It’s a fantastic group of people, with great sponsors. And it was a beautiful day.”

“The finish line was great with the support,” adds Dicroce. “I’d say this is the most well done transition area I’ve seen at any sprint triathlon. The music on the course was awesome and got me pumped up.”

In the women’s sprint race, Denver’s Amy Mossner Romero crossed the finish line first in 1:08:24, followed by Littleton’s Julianna Batizy-Morley in 1:09:29. Denver’s Alicia Caldwell made it an all age 40-plus podium, finishing in 1:11:05.

Presenting sponsor REI featured bike tech support for participants before and after the race as well as a post event photo booth to capture the memories of the day. Spectators also cheered on participants with REI cowbells. Additionally, Team REI from the flagship Denver store won the Sprint Relay competition. Further, employees from Colorado Springs-based USA Triathlon also participated on race day, and celebrated three age group wins.

Former “The Bachelorette” winner Roberto Martinez traveled to Colorado to compete in the inaugural event, finishing his second ever triathlon in 1:33:05. He competed in TriRock Clearwater last year.

“The race was  great,” said Martinez. “The TriRock Series supports their athletes really well, which is important. It’s safe and there are people everywhere in case you have any trouble. I think most importantly it’s fun. Triathlons are hard enough, and the environment makes it that much easier.”

TriRock Colorado featured Sprint and Intermediate distance events as well as a three-person relay, where a team of participants split the swim, bike and run courses. The triathlon offered a rocking competition for all skill levels, complete with music along the course and a post-race party and concert. Colorado participants received a finisher’s medal, technical t-shirt, red carpet finish, post-race breakfast and access to the concert and beer garden.

The TriRock Triathlon Series next heads to Asbury Park, N.J. on Aug. 25. Learn more about the TriRock Series presented by REI at TriRockSeries.com.
